The Old Railway Track

Nature has taken back
The old railway track
On the outskirts of Louth
Running north to south

Time has stood still
Allowing nature to refill
Filling her own hours
Sowing weeds and wild flowers
Crawling all over the route
With their sprawling over-shoots

A conspiracy of trees
Hide a secret waterfall
Only the call of water
Over-flowing
Gives itself away
In its rush to get going
To the sea without delay

Intermittent tunnels
Of tall towering trees
Create shadows of darkness
All along the way
And junctions at footpaths
Highlight the way

Clouds roam and reign the sky
Grey stains gathering rain
Stopping to drain
Before travelling once again

Cargoes of corn
Set in parcel rolls
Stretch across the rolling Wolds
Ready to be dispatched
And sold

Bean stalks are ready
For plucking
Once the farmer can get
The truck in
Through trenches of nettle
Barriers
Where once stood train
Carriers

It’s all change
For the seasonal landscape
Once a crop is harvested
The fields are rearranged
And all is changed
